About Cheryl
Artist Statement
I am a retired Clinical and Research Psychologist. As a researcher, I examined optimal treatments across a range of medical conditions. As a clinician, I had the honor of working with veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs. It was there that I witnessed the positive effects of artistic expression upon healing. Now, in my retirement, I have the opportunity to apply these learnings towards my own artistic expression and share them with the Half Moon Bay community.
I am fascinated by pattern and texture: The rhythmic sounds of the crochet hook or knitting needles passing over yarn; the coolness of silk; the elementary patterns found in Mesopotamian reliefs that persist in the murals, quilts and decorative household objects of today.
By the age of 5, my grandmother had taught me to sew on a Singer machine powered by a treadle. She also taught me to embroider - chain, lazy daisy, buttonhole stitches, french and bouillon knots. There were endless variations and perfections to occupy our cherished time together. I saw the birds, flowers, and butterflies printed on cloth come alive under my embroidery hoop.
To this day, when I hold a piece of string or a scrap of fabric, I become energized by the promise of possibilities and rejuvenation. I am transported to generations past and future.
